Abstract

Ramdani Hilman. 1616500016: 2020. “An Analysis of the Difficulties Encountered by Non-English Students in Speaking English.” Research project Strata 1, English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Pancasakti University Tegal. First Advisor Drs. Rofiudin, M.Hum., Second Advisor Noeris Meiristiani, M.Pd. Speaking is the action of conveying information or expressing the idea and feelings in spoken language. This research explained an analysis of the difficulties encountered by non-English students in speaking English (a descriptive study on sixth semester students at Economics and Business faculty of University of Pancasakti Tegal in academic year 2019/2020). This research used a qualitative research method. The researcher chose the 6th semester of Class A as a sample consisted of 30 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaires and interviews. The researcher used four major phases of the data analysis, they were; google form, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing verification. From the data analysis, the researcher found some conclusion of students’ problems in mastering speaking skills at Economics and Business Faculty especially in Accounting Department as follows: first, the researcher found that the students’ problems in mastering speaking were: lack of vocabulary 100%, pronunciation 76.7%, grammar 86.7%, fluency 80% and difficulty to understand what the speaker said 90%. Second, the psychological factors of problems that students in mastering speaking skills were: unconfident 83%, fear to make mistakes 70%, anxiety 56%, and shyness 53%.
