Abstract

LESTARI, YUMNA ATIKAH. 2020. 1616500059: “A Descriptive Study on Linguistic Errors of the Eighth Semester Students of the English Department In The Writing Activities (A Research in the English Department Pancasakti University in Academic Year 2019/2020)”. Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal, The First Advisor is Drs. JCS. Pradjarto, M.Pd and The Second Advisor is Nur Aflahatun, M.Pd. Key words: Vocabulary, Linguistics, Language, Writing, Students. Error classified into two types, there are linguistic classification and surface taxonomy. Linguistic classification identifies errors in aspect of linguistic categories such as phonological, grammatical and lexical. This study was conducted to answer the following question (1) What types of errors made by the eighth semester students of English Department on their writing activities? (2) What is the common errors made by the eighth semester students?. The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To describe the errors made by the eighth semester students of English Department on their writing activities? (2) To find out the common errors made by the eighth semester students. The writer used descriptive method to describe students’ linguistic errors in writing recount text. The subject of this study was the eighth semester students of English Department Pancasakti University Tegal. They were consisted of 25 students as the subject of the research. In collecting data, the writer gave a topic “Unforgettable Experience”. The writing should consist of three or more paragraphs with 10-20 sentences. The result of analysis shows that (1) The eighth semester students committed errors in writing recount text. They committed word order errors 67 (17.4%), spelling 58 (15.1%), article 54 (14.1%), addition 47 (12.2%), punctuation 45 (11.7%), capitalization 43 (11.1%), singular plural 29 (7.6%), word choice 15 (3.9%), omission 9 (2.3%), verb tense and word form 7 (1.8%), and incomplete sentence 4 (1%). (2) It shown that the most common error is word order. Then, the writer suggest to the students to master the vocabulary and linguistic aspect also more practice in writing and to the English Teacher to pay more attention on students’ linguistic aspect and evaluate the teaching style in teaching learning process.
