Abstract

ABSTRACT Puspa, Rizqa Lestari YD.2020. 1616500044. “Communication Strategies Used by The English Teachers in Online Class (A Descriptive Study Research at Vocational High School in Tegal in the Academic Year 2019/2020)”. Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal, The First Advisor is Yulia Nur Ekawati, M.Pd and the Second Advisor is Endang Sulistianingsih, M.Pd. Keywords: Communication Strategies, Teaching English, Online Class This study was conducted to analyze the communication strategies used by the English teacher at vocational high school in the online class. English language learning in online class was implemented using WhatsApp. The objectives of this study is to find out the communication strategies and its implementation by the English teachers to teach in the online class. Descriptive qualitative research was used as the approach in this study. Thus, the participant of the research are two the English teachers at Vocational High School. The data was collected by visual material (text message social media) and interview. The data was analyzed based on a Dornyei’s Taxonomy. The results in this study by visual material from the first teacher showed that code switching, appeal for help, and stalling were the strategies used by the English teachers to teach in online class. Meanwhile, code switching and stalling were the strategies that found in second teacher. Thus, the result by interview from the first teacher stated that code switching and literal translation are the most frequently used, and from second teacher stated only used code switching and one additional strategy, namely code mixing. The conclusion of this study indicated that the dominant communication strategies used by the English teachers in online class are code switching and stalling. It because can help the students more easier to understand the material that presented by the English teachers. Therefore, it is suggestion to the teachers expected to choose and used those strategies to take the students’ attention and interest.
