Abstract

This learning model was designed to guide both lecturers and students in learning EFL genre-based writing to the English department in any universities or colleges in Indonesia in general, and those of English department of Universitas Pancasakti in particular, to enhance their writing ability and to promote learner autonomy. This learning model contains 4 (four) main components: mini lesson, writing activities, summative assessment, and reflection. Mini lesson is learning activity which consists of modelling and reviewing. Some models of genre-based wrting works are presented in the classroom and reviewed collaboratively by students and lecturers. In writing activities, students practice to write genres by utilizing four self-assessment instruments; (1) selfediting checklist (SEC), (2) learning logs (LL), (3) checklist of writing strategies (CWS), and (4) survey of interest and awareness (SIA). The implementation of such instruments is embedded in the writing process which consists of six stages: planning, writing first draft, assessing, polishing, and writing final draft. SEC is employed during polishing stage of the writing process. Throughout this checklist, students figure out problems or weaknesses in their writing and find out ways to cope with them through feedback from their peers and teacher or lecturer. LL is used during writing instruction. Students spend about 5 to 10 minutes at the end of each lesson to make entries about what they have learned, the problems encountered, what to do in the next lesson, etc., and to gather feedback from their peers and the lecturer. CWS is employed after the students finish a writing activity in which they figure out their strategies before, during, and after writing. After doing some exercises and assignments of writing, students fill out survey of interest and awareness (SIA) to gather their reponses relating to interest and awareness after learning through self-assessment. Meanwhile, Summative assessment is conducted at the end of lesson or course period to find out the students’ achievement. Reflective practices are also carried out afterward to figure out the results and plan the future learning. Keywords: Model, self-assessment, genre-based writing
