Abstract

Novi Aeni, Nurul. 2021. 1617500016: "The Effect of Crossword Puzzle Game Towards Students’ Vocabulary Achievement (An Experimental Study at the Seventh Grade Students of SMP Muhammadyah 2 Kota Tegal )". English Education Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Pancasakti University Tegal. First advisor is Yulia Nur Ekawati, M.P.d, and the second advisor is Fajar Prihatini, M.Pd. Keywords: Crossword Puzzle Game, Vocabulary Achievement. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the Crossword Puzzle game is an effective technique for the vocabulary learning achievement at seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Tegal. Based on the theoretical basis and theoretical framework, the research hypothesis is formulated as follows: It is suspected that the use of crossword puzzles is effectively used in learning vocabulary mastery for seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Tegal in the 2020/2021 academic year. The population in this study are all seventh-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Tegal in the 2020/2021 academic year. totally 49 students. The sample of this study was taken as many as 30 students who were divided into experimental and control groups. This study uses the Cluster Random Sampling technique. The instrument used to collect data is a test consisting of pre-test and post-test. The samples were divided into two groups, first group consisted of 15 students as a control group who were taught using conventional method, and second group consisted of 15 students who were taught using crossword puzzle game. Analysis of the data from this study was obtained using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 22, the average post-test results for both groups were 82.33 > 69.67. Based on the results of hypothesis testing using the two independent sample t-test, a significance value of 0.000 was obtained, which was smaller than the significance value of 0.05, which means Ha is accepted. This means that there is a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. The conclusion of this study shows that the use of the crossword puzzle game has a positive effect on students' vocabulary, and is effective for use in teaching vocabulary. Therefore, it is recommended to use crossword puzzles as a technique in teaching English in general and teaching vocabulary in particular
