Abstract

Insani, Amalia Nur 2022. 1618500054 : “The Effect of Task-Based Instruction on Students’ Speaking Ability (An Experimental Research at Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 01 Kota Tegal)”. Research Project. Strata I Program, English Department. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Pancasakti University Tegal, First Advisor : Dr. Taufiqulloh, M. Hum Second Advisor : Anin Eka Sulistyawati, S.S., M.Hum Keywords: Task-Based Instruction (TBI), Language Teaching and Learning, English Language Teaching (ELT). The objectives of this research are 1) to find out To find out whether the Task-Based Instruction is effective to teach speaking to the student of SMP N 01 Kota Tegal or not, 2) to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between students who study using the Task-Based Instruction method and those who don't, 3) to find out the students’ perception on the implementation of Task-Based Instruction for teaching speaking. In this research, the population is the eighth-grade students of SMP N 01 Kota Tegal, which is a total of 230 students. The researcher uses cluster random sampling with two group designs (experimental group and control group). The total sample is 60 students, 30 students are as experimental group and 30 students are as the control group. The experimental group was taught through Task-Based Instruction method for eight meetings, while the control group studied the same material without using Task-Based Instruction. After eight meetings of treatment, students were given a post-test similar to the pre-test to assess the effect of the teaching program on students' speaking ability before and after the treatment. Furthermore, students responded to a questionnaire to give feedback about the implementation of Task-Based Instruction in the experimental group. To determine if the test results were statistically significant or not, the paired T-test was used and the results of the tests showed that the experimental group had improved their speaking ability more than the control group. In addition, the questionnaire data shows that 60% of students agree that TBI help practice speaking ability in English because they have to perform the task in front of the class. In conclusion, TBI has a positive effect on students' speaking ability.
