Abstract

WIBOWO, EVA M. 2022. 1618500015: “Students’ Perception on the Use of Ice Breaker Games to Increase Students’ Motivation in Learning English”. Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal. The first Advisor is Noeris Meiristiani, M.Pd and the second Advisor is Sanday Jamaludin, M.Pd Key words: Students’ Perception, Ice Breaker Games, Students’ Motivation, Learning English This research aimed to find out (1) The students’ perceptions on the use of ice breaker games to increase students’ motivation in learning English; (2) The implementation of ice breaker games increases students’ motivation in learning English. The data were conducted on May 2022 from 32 students of class 8E at SMP N 19 Tegal in academic year 2021/2022. This research used a descriptive-qualitative research method. The instruments were an observation, questionnaire and interview. The validity and reliability of questionnaire checked by Correlation Product Moment in SPSS version 22 and the observation and interview approved by the adviser. From the data findings, the researcher draws some conclusions that most of the student gave positive perceptions on the use of ice breaker games to increase students’ motivation in learning English. They were being fun, enthusiast, being more active, they were easier to understand the materials. Nevertheless, few students felt unenthusiastic to learn material that they were not good at. They need more attention from the teacher to give them the other ice breaker type to increase their comprehension in learning English. Thus, the creativity of the teacher in the form of ice breaker game was continuously developed or improved variety of ice breaker used to increase students’ motivation in learning English.
