Abstract

Uzma, Maulida Fortuna, 2022. 1618500053 : “Deixis Analysis in “The Gift of the Magi” for Teaching Writing Narrative”. Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal, The First Advisor is Dr. Yoga Prihatin, M.Pd and The Second Advisor is Fajar Prihatini, M.Pd. Key words: Deixis, Reference, Short story, Writing, Narrative The aims of this research are to identify the types of deixis are used in “The Gift of the Magi”, to analyze the reference meaning are revealed in “The Gift of the Magi”, and to find out the application in teaching writing narrative by using “The Gift of the Magi”. Deixis is the word that point to the person, time and place/situation of the speaker say in written or spoken language. This research was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative method. The kind of research is content analysis. In addition, analyze three types of deixis in short story using Yule's theory. The data which used short story “The Gift of the Magi”, meanwhile the data were obtained from documentation. The result of this research, there were 216 deixis, those are: 10 (5%) spatial deixis, 21 (10%) temporal deixis, 27 (12%) second person deixis, 38 (18%) first person deixis found, and the most deixis types used in the short story is 120 (55%) third person deixis, most of reference meaning refers to Della and Mr. James because main character in this short story is Della and Mr. James, deixis can be applied in teaching writing narrative in KD 3.5 & 4.5 about distinguishing social function, structure text, and some linguistic elements of narrative text & capturing meaning contextual related to a social function, structure text, and linguistic elements of text narrative.
