Abstract

Strata I Program, EnglishDepartment.FacultyofTeacherTrainingandEducation.PancasaktiUniversityTegal, FirstAdvisor :Dr.YogaPrihatin,M.Pd SecondAdvisors :Drs.H.MasfuadEdySantoso,M.Pd Keywords:speecherror,factorspeecherror,Englishdebate. The objectives of this research are 1) to find out the types of speech errorsencountered in the English debate competition, 2) to calculate the frequency ofspeech error made by the participants in the English debate competition. This typeofresearchisqualitativedescriptive. Participantsinthisstudyincluded12people;sixfromGonzagacompetition and six fromSetara competition. The research uses observations,analysis, and reports as instruments. The researcher uses thetheory from Clarkand Clark of speech errors. There are 9 types of speech errors according to Clarkand Clark, namely; silent pause, filled pause, retraced false start, unretraced falsestart,interjection,correction,repeats, stutter, slipof thetongue. Based on the analysis, the researcher found 860 speech containing speecherrors, that show the highest to the lowest frequency of occurrence of the types oferror: filled pause 34,61%, silent pause 25,00%, repeats 17,09%, retraced falsestart 11,6%, slip of the tongue 3,84%, stutter 3,26%, unretraced false start 3,14%,interjection1,16%, and thelowestiscorrection 0,07%. Fromallthedataanalysis,thewriterconcludesthatallparticipantsencountered errors during their speech. The cognitive, psychological and socialreasons that lead the speakers to encountered speech errors were also found as thesourcesof thosespeecherrors.
