Abstract
Putri, Atika Anggela, 2022. 1618500031: “An Analysis of Figurative Language and Imagery Used in The Lyric of Levitating By Dua Lipa and Its Application in English Language Teaching.” Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal, The First Advisor is Nur Laila Molla, S.Pd., M.Hum, and the Second Advisor is Sanday Jamaludin, M.Pd. Key words : Figurative Language, Imagery, Song Lyrics, Levitating, English Language Teaching This research aims to identify figurative language and imagery, to describe the contextual meaning used in Dua Lipa’s song lyric “Levitating” and its application in English language teaching. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The subject of analysis in this research is the song lyric “Levitating” by Dua Lipa. The researcher uses the documentation technique as the way to collect the data. The figurative language and imagery are analyzed using Thomas R. Arp and Greg Johnson's theory in their book, "Perrine's Literature Structure, Sound & Sense." Thirteenth edition. The results of this research: 17 (seventeen) figurative languages used in this song, 1 or 6% simile, 2 or 12% metaphor, 9 or 53% overstatement/ hyperbole, and 5 or 29% symbol. 22 (twenty-two) song lyrics contain imagery, 8 or 36% visual imagery, 1 or 5% auditory imagery, 5 or 23% organic imagery, and 8 or 36% kinesthetic imagery. The results of this research can be applied to English language learning materials. Namely, KD 3.9 & 4.9, Interpreting social functions and linguistic elements & capturing contextual meaning related to social functions and linguistic aspects of song lyrics related to the teenagers of senior high school life. From the analysis results, it can be concluded that there are four types of figurative language, among others: simile, metaphor, overstatement, and symbol. Furthermore, there are four types of imagery: visual, auditory, organic, and kinesthetic. The song describes romantic things as the feelings and atmosphere of someone in love. The results of this research can be applied as teaching material and media in the English language teaching class, especially in studying English literature learning about figurative language and song.
