Abstract

Nikmah, Azka Syifaul. 2022. 1620600037 : “Gender Representation in an English Textbook Entitled “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas XII” published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia (2018 Revised Edition)”. Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal. The First Advisor is Yuvita M. Pd. and The Second Advisor is Anin Eka Sulistyawati, S.S., M.Hum Key words: Textbook, Gender Equality, Gender Stereotypes. The objectives of this research are to analyze the representation of gender, to find out the domination of gender equality and stereotypes representation in an English textbook entitled “Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas XII” published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia (2018 Revised Edition). Gender is a difference between being feminine and masculine which is produced by society. Critical discourse analysis based on Fairclough's (2001) and Kress and Van Leeuwen's (2006) theory were applied in this research. The data were obtained from textual and visual forms based on the terms of domestic chores, role model, achievement, activities, and appearance, also used several aspects from Porreca (1984) and Mills (2005) framework such as visibility, occupation, and noun. The findings of this research showed that in representing gender in the textbook, the authors tried to promote gender equality and minimize gender stereotypes for both genders. The authors also tried to promote gender equality more dominant because gender equality representation was found in every aspects. However, the domination of gender stereotypes still represented in several aspects in the textbook. Based on the findings, the English textbooks authors are suggested to increase gender equality by shows female and male in an equal proportion to increase student understanding and positive perceptions about two genders.
