Abstract

MUHAMMAD FA’IQ, FIRMANSYAH. 2022. 1618500074: “Analysis ff Students’ Difficulties in Translating News Item Text (The Descriptive Qualitative Research at Senior High School 1 Pangkah in Academic Year 2021/2022). Research Project. Strata I Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Pancasakti Tegal, The First advisor is Dr. Taufiqulloh, M.Hum and The Second Advisor is Noeris Meiristiani, M.Pd. Key words: News item text, Students difficulties, Translation process The main objective of this study was to know the students’ difficulties in translating news item text at SMA Negeri 1 Pangkah Kabupaten Tegal. Students should be translating the news item text from English into Bahasa Indonesia. The research approach was qualitative and the research design was descriptive analysis. The sample was students from 12th grade from XII MIPA 1. The researcher used purposive sampling which consisting of 30 students that participated in this research. In this study, 30 students participated to did the test to find out the types of difficulties while translating news item text. The result of the test showed that there were found four types of difficulties namely; lexical, grammatical, contextual and socio-cultural. The researcher also conducted an interview to 10 students to share their process when they were translating the text The interview result showed that the researcher found that 7 (seven) students used the stage of translation process in translating news text, 3 (three) students didn’t use all stages. In conclusion, in translating the news item text, students found 4 difficulties there were 1) lexical difficulties due to lack of vocabulary mastery. The difficulties in adjusting lexical meaning 2) grammatical difficulties relate to reported speech usage, perfect tenses usage, relative pronoun usage and etc. 3) contextual difficulties relate to the lack of students to make relationship between utterance and the situation at the time the utterance is used 4) cultural difficulties relate to the lack of background knowledge about cultural aspects both of the languages. Second, the researcher found that 7 (seven) students use the stage of translation process in translating news text, there were: analysis, transfer, and restructuring. Then, 3 (three) students didn’t use the all of the stage in translation process.
