Abstract

SURYANI, SISI. 2023. 1616500048: “The Effectiveness of Using Skimming, Scanning, Making Predictions, and Questioning Reading Strategies to Improve Student’s Reading Ability”. Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal. The first Advisor is Yuvita, M.Pd., and the second Advisor is Noeris Meiristiani, M. Pd. Key Words: Reading Strategies, Reading Ability The objective of this research is to find out whether Reading Strategies are effective to improve student’s reading ability for the tenth-grade students of SMK Darul Khair Pulosari in the academic year 2022/2023. The research questions of this research are “How effective is the use of Skimming, Scanning, Making Predictions, and Questioning Reading Strategies to increase students' reading ability?” and “Are there any significant differences in the use of Reading strategies to increase students' reading ability?” Based on the review of related theories and theoretical framework, the research hypothesis is proposed as follows: Skimming, Scanning, Making Predictions, and Questioning Reading Strategies are effective to improve student’s reading ability for the tenth-grade students of SMK Darul Khair Pulosari in the academic year 2022/2023. The samples of the research are 35 students in the tenth grade taken by using purposive sampling. They are belonging to one group pre-test and post-test that are taught by using skimming, scanning, making predictions, and questioning strategies. Pre-test and post-test were chosen to find out the student's reading ability before and after the researcher gave the treatment. The researcher uses a narrative reading test as the instrument of the research. The type of test is multiple-choice tests with five options. The result of the study showed that the students' mean score on pre-tests was 59,14, and their post-test score was 84,29. It means that there was a significant difference in students' reading ability before taught using reading strategies and after being taught by the use of reading strategies. Then the rate percentage in the post-test was higher than the rate percentage in the pre-test in teaching reading, and the t-test was greater than the value of the t-table (13,114>2.042). the result of the research proved that the use of Reading Strategies was effective to be used in teaching the students reading ability and it means that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternate hypothesis is accepted. It can be concluded that Reading Strategies be used to improve students' reading ability significantly.
