Abstract

Lestani, Dita Dwi 2023, 1618500041: “Students’ Perceptions Toward Video Project as Media in Improving Their Speaking Skills”. Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University, Tegal. First Advisor Noeris Meiristiani, M.Pd and Second Advisor Anin Eka Sulistyawati, M.Hum. Keywords: video project, students’ perception, speaking skills. This study is aimed to find out students' perceptions of using video projects as a medium to develop their speaking skills and to find out the strengths and weaknesses of using video projects in teaching speaking. The participants in this research are 39 students of second semester at English Education Department of Universitas Pancasakti Tegal. Qualitative method was applied in this study. The researcher also used triangulation with three instruments. Questionnaire, interview, and documentation were used as the instruments to get the data. The result of this research showed that the students have positive perception in the use video project as media can improve their speaking skills. They think that video projects help them practice their speaking skills. Video projects have several strengths and weaknesses in learning to speak through video projects. The strengths of video projects in learning to speak outweigh the weaknesses. The results of the interviews also indicated that the video project helped them to realize their mistakes, so that they can overcome these mistakes to become better speakers. This means that video projects are feasible to implement in English classes. The conclusion of this study shows that they are interested in making video projects as their learning media to develop their English. The students agreed that the video project developed their confidence to speak. In this case, they find their strength in speaking in their confidence in front of the camera. Video projects are also a fun medium and allow students to benefit from using gadgets for their practical speaking. Therefore, it is expected that educators will use video projects as learning media so that students can enjoy the learning process more and improve students' speaking abilities. Students can also understand their strengths and develop them. For further research, it is expected that other researchers will explore more about using video projects as learning media not only in speaking classes but in reading and listening classes.
