Amalia, Susi Nur. 2024. 1619500026:“An Analysis of Essay Writing Difficulties Faced by Third Semester Students of English Education Department at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal”. Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Pancasakti Tegal, the first advisor is Noeris Meiristiani, M.Pd and the second advisor is Endang Sulistianingsih, M.Pd. Keywords: Essay Writing, Students’ Difficulties, Writing The objectives of this research were to analyze the difficulties faced by third-semester students of the English Department at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal in Essay Writing. Additionally, the research aimed to identify the root causes of these difficulties. This research used descriptive qualitative method, and recruited students' work and open-ended questionnaire es as instruments. There were 22 students of the third semester of the English Department used as the research sample. The sample was selected by purposive sampling technique. Data collection from each instrument was as follows: questionnaire data collection via a google form, and document data collection through students’ essay writing. The collected data were analyzed based on Brown’s rubric that focused on five aspects; organization, content, grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary. The result of this research showed that students face difficulties in essay writing. In organization aspect, students struggle to organize ideas, including inappropriate opening sentences and a lack of thesis statements or conclusion paragraphs. In content, students encountered difficulty linking paragraphs due to a shortage of ideas. Grammar difficulties encompassed issues with prepositions, linking verbs, and article determination. Vocabulary challenges included word choice and verbosity. In mechanics, students struggled with punctuation placement, capitalization, and margins. Additionally, the research identified influencing factors contributing to students' difficulties, such as the nature of process writing, inadequate time, lack of motivation, and insufficient writing practice. According to the analysis, students often encounter challenges and obstacles during the process of writing essays. For this reason, it is suggested for students to give more attention to the five aspect of writing, and for the lecture, it is necessary to evaluate and improve in learning English so that students can be more interested, and enthusiastic in essay writing.
