Strata I Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal, The First Advisor is Dr. Yoga Prihatin, M.Pd, and The Second Advisor is Nur Aflahatun, M.Pd. Keywords: Slang Word Mastery, Vocabulary Achievement, Students. The purpose of this study to describe the types of slang language are used in social media by English Department Students of Universitas Pancasakti Tegal and to find out the reasons for using slang language in social media by English Department Students of Universitas Pancasakti Tegal. Besides, the impacts of slang language used in social media are people can deliver information easier but it can arouse a bad impact in writing (error in grammar). In this research, the researcher uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Qualitative research is a form of social inquiry that focuses on the way people interpret and make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live. The study population was 8th-semester students majoring in English education at Pancasakti University, Tegal. The total population of 20 students. The researcher uses observation techniques and open questionnaires. The observation technique uses direct and detailed observation activities on social media of students majoring in English at Pancasakti University in Tegal to find information about the slang language uses by them. Meanwhile, an open questionnaire is an interview-based on unlimited questions (not bound), the answer is done via google forms. The data of this research were obtained from the observations of slang language and questionnaires. The research analysis was carried out using observations from each of their social media to obtain what types of slang used by 20 students. From the results of the data observations, it shows that there are 5 types of slang used by these students, namely fresh and creative, compounding, imitation, acronym, and clipping. after the from 75 slang words found in social media, there are 19 (25.3 %) slang words which are categorized as fresh and creative slang type, 12 (16 %) slang words which are categorized as compounding, 15 (20 %) slang words which are categorized as imitative, and 14 (18.7 %) slang words which are categorized as an acronym, and 15 (20 %) slang words which are categorized as clipping. And then, from the results the data questionnaires, it shows that there are 20 data from 7 reasons for using slang, there are 3 (15 %) slang words which have a function to address, 7 (35 %) slang words which have a function to initiate relax conversation, 2 (10 %) slang words which have a function to humiliate, 1 (5 %) slang words which have a function to form an intimate atmosphere, 1 (5 %) slang words which have a function to express impression and 4 (20 %) slang words which have a function to reveal anger, 2 (10 %) slang words which have a function to show intimacy. At the significance level, it can be concluded that the mastery of slang vocabulary on social media is widely used by students of the English Department of Pancasakti University in Tegal.
