Abstract

Ghina Hardani Zulfatunnisa, 2024. 1619500033. “Students’ Difficulties in using Debate Technique in Public Speaking Class”. Research Project. Strata 1 Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Pancasakti Tegal, the first advisor is Dr. Yoga Prihatin, M.Pd, and the second advisor, Ihda Rosdiana, S.Pd., M. Hum, Keywords : Students’ difficulties, Debate technique, Speaking skills This research’s background is based on the problems of people to express their ideas, conveying argument, and defend their opinions with others in social life. This is the reason why the researcher used the debate technique in learning environtment in order to find out about students difficulties to speak to express their ideas. It is supported by problems found in several studies that used the debate technique to improve students’ speaking skills. This research objectives is to find out about students’ difficulties and factors affect the difficulties in using debate technique in public speaking class at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal. The subject of this research was 25 students in 9th semester of English Education Department in public speaking class at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal in academic year of 2022/2023. The research methodology from this research is a descriptive qualitative design. It describe about students difficulties and factors affect the difficulties in using debate technique in public speaking class. To collect the data, the researcher used questionnaire. The data analysis technique used the likert scale and scoring. The findings of this research of students’ difficulties came from both internal factors and external factors. From the finding of this research, in internal factors, students faced more difficulties in vocabulary 52%, pronounciation 44%, and motivation 56%. While in external factors students faced more difficulties in learner’s background 36%, learning environtment 52%, and parental involvement 34%. These problems related to one another. The highest to the lowest score come from motivation 56%, vocabulary and learning environtment 52%, pronounciation 44%, learners’ background 36%, and parental involvement 34%. From the findings above, it can be conclude that students difficulties and students’ factors affect the difficulties in using debate technique in 9th semester students in public speaking class at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal are motivation, vocabulary, learning environtment, pronounciation, learners’ background, and parental involvement.
