NABILLA, NAHDATUL. 2024. 1619500065. “An Analysis of Tegalnese Accent Interference Toward Pronouncing English Consonant Sounds”. Research Project. English Education Program. Faculty Of Teacher Training and Education. Pancasakti Tegal University. The First advisor is Dr. Yoga Prihatin, M.Pd. The second advisor is Ihda Rosdiana S. Pd., M. Hum. Keywords: Tegalnese’ Accent, English Pronunciation, English Consonant This research aims to analyze Tegalnese accent interference in students’ pronouncing English consonant sounds, to find out the most difficult English consonant sounds to pronounce by Tegalnese students, and to find out the factors that caused the boldness accent in students’ pronouncing English consonant sounds. Tegalnese students of English encountered several interferences in pronouncing English consonants. It's because most of them have been speaking Tegalnese since they were kids. Moreover, English is not widely spoken outside of the classroom as a foreign language. Qualitative descriptive methods are used by the researcher. The population of this research is 20 Fourth-semester students majoring in the English education program at Pancasakti Tegal University in the academic year 2023/2024. The pronunciation test, questionnaire and interview are used to collect the data. The pronunciation test of 24-consonant is collected through a record player. The questionnaire on a 12-item Likert scale is based on 4 categories. While the interview is done through 5 open-ended questions. To begin with, the results showed that Tegalnese students of English encountered difficulties in pronouncing 4 consonant sounds / δ, d, t, v /. Second, 4 factors have been identified as limiting the ability of Tegalese pupils to acquire a pronounced dialect: exposure, motivation, high context culture and low cont ext culture. Third, the Tegalnese students have told the researchers that it is difficult to remove the Tegalnese accent of "ngapak" from the pronunciation of the English consonants, and the five consonants are an interference of the Tegalnese accent, namely the consonants; /b/, /d/, /g/, /dʒ/, and /ð/. In conclusion, it is the Tegalese accent that continues to interfere students from speaking their English consonants correctly.
